Boulder Canyon Authenic Foods GFCO Pull-back—Update (2/14/14)

The Gluten Free Certification Organization (GFCO) has issued a pull-back notice on two of our Boulder Canyon products due to concerns that the snacks in question do not meet GFCO guidelines for gluten-free.

Which Boulder Canyon products are impacted by this pullback?

The GFCO pull-back request impacts the following two Boulder Canyon products only: 1) Boulder Canyon Malt Vinegar and Sea Salt Kettle chips and 2) Boulder Canyon Malt Vinegar and Sea Salt, Wavy Potato Chips, Kettle Cooked in 100% Avocado Oil.

Why are Boulder Canyon’s Malt Vinegar and Sea Salt kettle chips labeled as gluten-free?

The Gluten Free Certification program allows for less than10 ppm gluten. All Boulder Canyon products, including the two Malt Vinegar products specified, have undergone proper third-party testing methodology as directed by The GFCO to confirm compliance with the 10 ppm (or less) standards.

Do your Malt Vinegar chips fall within the FDA and GFCO standards for gluten-free ppm levels?

Yes, our Boulder Canyon Malt Vinegar and Sea Salt Kettle chips and Boulder Canyon Malt Vinegar and Sea Salt, Wavy Potato Chips test well within the less than10 ppm standards for gluten set by The GFCO. In addition, all of our products labeled gluten-free fall beneath the 20 ppm standards outlined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Why has the GFCO issued a pullback request on these two products?

In August of last year, the FDA issued a final ruling that defines what foods may carry the term “gluten-free” on their packaging. The ruling is clear regarding allowable gluten ppm (20 ppm), but a final clarification has yet to be established regarding the use of grain ingredients that have been processed to remove gluten. The GFCO has requested clarification from FDA on this issue. In interim, it is our understanding that the GFCO will no longer certify these products pending FDA clarification. Boulder Canyon wishes to be compliant with current GFCO compliance standards, so we have taken proactive, corrective measures pending FDA clarification on this issue.

What has Boulder Canyon done in reaction to the GFCO pullback request?

Boulder Canyon has taken immediate steps to remove the GFCO logo from packaging artwork for our two Malt Vinegar and Sea Salt kettle chip products. In addition, Boulder has voluntarily removed the “Gluten Free” artwork from the front of the bag for these products in the interest of eliminating any confusion among our consumers. No additional packaging for our Malt Vinegar and Sea Salt chips have been, or will be, printed with the GFCO logo. Additionally, we have stickered over the GFCO logo of all Malt Vinegar and Sea Salt chips at our manufacturing facility, as well as distribution centers where product awaits shipment. Once again, these products do test well below both GFCO and FDA the standards for gluten-free levels. However, it is in the interest of our partnership with the GFCO and in reaction to concerns among our gluten-free consumers that we have taken these proactive measures.

Boulder Canyon is committed to our gluten-free consumers, and we would never intentionally misrepresent a product or our relationship with the GFCO. We remain dedicated to making minimally-processed snacks that feature the best ingredients, and we stand committed to transparency with the GFCO and our consumers.
